Our Approach to Coaching

Our approach to coaching is to start with Values.

We all lead our lives according to our values, but we don't necessarily understand what they really are. Our values enable us to make decisions. If our decisions are in line with our values, we are comfortable with them; if not, then we often experience a dis-ease, but are not quite sure why.

Understanding our values helps us make decisions we are more comfortable with; that's why, at the beginning, we work with each new client to help clarify their values.

Coaching is all about you!

You may be considering coaching because you feel that there is ‘something missing’ in life. This doesn’t have to be a ‘negative’ sentiment: it may reflect a wish to change direction, achieve more, help others, perform better, or realise your full potential. There may even be a “I wish I could do…” sentiment, which you wish to explore and act upon.

The aim of coaching is to provide a safe, confidential and non-judgemental space in which you can find your own answers to the ‘something missing’ question. This may mean:

  • Better performance at work, in sport or hobbies
  • Overcoming self-doubt about abilities and choices
  • Approaching life change, ageing, or life transitions with confidence
  • Finding meaning and purpose in life

The benefit of coaching is that you are really listened to, and powerful questions create new awareness for you to use in deciding your future. Coaching allows you to change your perspective, so that you can discover opportunities and set goals that you can achieve. Coaching believes that you have all the information and experience you need to identify and choose a positive way forward in reaching your goals.

“Brian has been very warm and systematic in his guidance of me in these sessions. His attitude has been one of using questions to guide me in my thinking and decision-making. He was also very clear as to the desired outcomes of each session. I would happily go to Brian again and would recommend him to anyone else seeking life coaching.” Nils

Coaching is not about the coach telling you what to do!

Coaching is NOT about dwelling in the past and trying to ‘fix’ a past problem. Whilst the past obviously has an impact on the present, it does not have to have any influence on the future, unless you wish it.

Coaching is NOT counselling or therapy. It does not try to analyse and fix a past issue or problem.

Coaching is NOT mentoring. It does not seek to teach you based on the previous experience of the coach.

Coaching is NOT consulting. It does not investigate issues, and then present a way forward.

The coach does not offer advice or give their own opinions, although they may ask permission to share something.
